FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spring brings an increased presence of Canada Geese in residential and commercial areas in McLean County as they complete their nesting cycle. This increased presence of Canada Geese often results in conflicts between them and humans. Common conflicts include threats to public safety as they defend their nests, and property damage from over-feeding. McLean County wants to remind the public that Canada Geese are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and that the protection under the act covers not only the geese, but their eggs and nests. Migratory waterfowl are regulated by the Federal Government and permits are issued by Illinois Department of Natural Resources and it is illegal to move, harass, disturb, injure, or kill migratory waterfowl without a permit issued by USFWS or IDNR.
A flow chart regarding the need for permits regarding Canada Geese can be found at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/files/controlling_nuisance_geese.pdf.
An informational pamphlet about managing conflicts can be found at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/wildlife/files/IL_WS_Canada_Goose.pdf.
If you experience a conflict with Canada Geese please contact the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Urban Waterfowl Project Manager, at (847) 608-3167
