Communicable Disease Clinic

The Communicable Disease Clinic at the McLean County Health Department offers screening, testing, treatment, and prevention services for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and tuberculosis (TB), along with HIV/AIDS counseling and testing. Communicable disease nurses also work with people reporting potential foodborne illness and adults needing preventative immunizations.

Preventing the spread of disease

Communicable, or infectious, diseases are illnesses spread by coming in contact with an infected someone or something. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the most common organisms causing communicable disease and each can be transmitted easily in a variety of ways including direct contact with body fluids, ingesting contaminated food or water, breathing contaminated air, or by the bite of an infected animal.

If one of these diseases pose a threat to public health, as in the case of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, vaccine-preventable agents, bacterial toxins, bioterrorism, and pandemics (e.g. avian influenza in humans), communicable disease investigators and public health nurses at the McLean County Health Department work together to promptly identify, prevent, and control the disease before it spreads throughout the community.

Adult vaccinations offer continued protection through all of life's stages

Vaccines provided through the Adult Immunization Clinic can assist in preventing diseases like:

  • seasonal flu
  • pneumonia
  • shingles
  • meningitis
  • Hepatitis
  • Hepatitis B

Not sure about your past immunizations or childhood diseases? Have a titer check

The Adult Immunization Clinic can also provide "titer" checks to demonstrate immunity to certain diseases. Immunity may have been acquired through previous vaccination or from having had the disease in the past. Titer testing is available for:

  • measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Hepatitis B
  • varicella (Chicken Pox)

If the titer check reveals there is no immunity to the disease, vaccination services can be provided.
